Miami locals can't wait to see their city in the game. Scammers are counting on that.
The short version
CBS News Miami warned on 18 October 2026 that social media ads selling early GTA 6 downloads install malware that can steal personal details and money. Malwarebytes and Kaspersky have tracked similar sites since June. The only genuine early download is the preload for digital preorders, which opens on 12 November.
Quick answer
Is GTA 6 early access real?
No. Nobody can sell you GTA 6 before 19 November 2026, and CBS News Miami warned on 18 October that social media ads offering early downloads are a scam that installs malware. The only genuine early download is a preload. Take Two says digital preorders can start downloading the game on 12 November.
Miami is about to see itself in a video game, and scammers have noticed. On Sunday morning CBS News Miami ran a report where locals cheered GTA 6's Vice City and a games editor warned viewers about one very specific trap.
"We're excited to be in our city in this game," Oscar Chiffone told reporter Anna McAllister. Then the report turned to the people trying to cash in on that excitement.
What did CBS Miami warn GTA 6 fans about?
Fake ads on social media that offer to let you download GTA 6 early if you pay.
Chris Mawson, founder and editor in chief of Power Up Gaming, told CBS News Miami the download is where it goes wrong. "When the user installs it, unfortunately, it turns out to be malware or a virus, giving scammers a way of stealing personal information or even money," he said.
He added that scammers often ask for cryptocurrency, because that money is harder to get back. His advice was to buy from Rockstar Games or a known store and pay by credit card. iGrandTheftAuto shared the clip on X, where it passed 8,000 views in about an hour.
Is GTA 6 early access a scam?
Yes. Rockstar Games is selling preorders, and no shop or website can sell you a playable copy before 19 November 2026.
That has been true all year, and the scams have run almost as long. In June, Malwarebytes flagged sites selling "VIP early access" for a few hundred dollars in crypto. Kaspersky reported on 6 October that a site called CyberLeek wanted $1,000 for a "full game" and $100 for 24 hours with a demo. The Cyberleek name also sits behind the leak claims we covered earlier this month.
What does a fake GTA 6 download do to your PC?
It can steal your logins. Malwarebytes found a fake GTA 6 demo installer carrying Vidar, malware built to grab saved passwords and cookies.
The August report traced a network of pages that copied Rockstar's Extended Look promotion and served a file called gta6_installer.exe. Because stolen browser sessions can sometimes be reused without a fresh login, Malwarebytes warned that two factor checks may not stop the thieves.
It also offered a simple test. A one megabyte file cannot hold a modern big budget game, and GTA 6 has no PC version announced at all. Our GTA 6 PC explainer covers why any PC download is fake.
When does the real GTA 6 preload start?
On 12 November 2026, for digital preorders, according to Take Two Interactive.
Take Two's preorder announcement from 24 June says boxed copies carry a download code and also arrive on 12 November, so disc buyers can preload too. The game is sold through the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Games Store and retailers.
One line in the CBS report needs a small correction. Mawson said there is "no way to preload" GTA 6. That holds today, but a genuine preload opens one week before launch.
| Offer | Real or scam | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Preorder from PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store or Rockstar Games Store | Real, open since 25 June 2026 | Take Two |
| Preload for digital preorders and boxed codes | Real, from 12 November 2026 | Take Two |
| Paid early access or VIP access | Scam | CBS News Miami, Malwarebytes |
| GTA 6 demo download | Scam, one carried Vidar malware | Malwarebytes |
| Leaked full game for $1,000 | Scam | Kaspersky |
| GTA 6 for PC | No PC version announced | Rockstar Games |
So the rule is short. If a link offers GTA 6 before the 19th, close it and set a reminder for 12 November. Our GTA 6 delay timeline tracks every date that is real.
