Quick answer
When does GTA 6 preload start?
Rockstar Games says GTA 6 digital preload begins on Tuesday 10 November, at midnight local time on PS5 and at 12am GMT worldwide on Xbox Series X|S. The file needs up to 212 GB depending on your device. The game launches on 19 November, and Rockstar has not stated a launch time.
You can start downloading GTA 6 on Tuesday 10 November, nine days before launch. That is two days earlier than the 12th, the date we had been carrying.
The times come from a Newswire post published on 3 November. PS5 opens at midnight local time in each time zone. Xbox Series X|S opens at one moment everywhere, 12am GMT.
Those two rules split the world. By our conversion, one console can open up to 13 hours before the other, depending on where you live.
When does GTA 6 preload start in the UK?
UK players on both consoles can start at midnight GMT, as Monday night turns into Tuesday. Local midnight and 12am GMT are the same moment here, so neither console gets a head start.
What time does GTA 6 preload start around the world?
PS5 opens first in Asia and Oceania, and Xbox opens first in the Americas, by our conversion from Rockstar's two start rules.
| Where | PS5 preload opens | Xbox preload opens |
|---|---|---|
| UK (GMT) | 00.00 Tue 10 Nov | 00.00 Tue 10 Nov |
| Central Europe (CET) | 00.00 Tue 10 Nov (23.00 GMT Mon) | 01.00 Tue 10 Nov |
| US East (ET) | 00.00 Tue 10 Nov (05.00 GMT Tue) | 19.00 Mon 9 Nov |
| US West (PT) | 00.00 Tue 10 Nov (08.00 GMT Tue) | 16.00 Mon 9 Nov |
| Japan (JST) | 00.00 Tue 10 Nov (15.00 GMT Mon) | 09.00 Tue 10 Nov |
| New Zealand (NZDT) | 00.00 Tue 10 Nov (11.00 GMT Mon) | 13.00 Tue 10 Nov |
Every time in the table is ours, converted from midnight local on PS5 and 12am GMT on Xbox. US clocks went back on 1 November, so the US rows use standard time.
In the US, Xbox owners can start on Monday evening. That is about five hours before PS5 on the East Coast and eight hours before it on the West Coast.
New Zealand flips the order. PS5 opens at local midnight, which is 11am GMT on Monday, and Xbox follows 13 hours later. In Japan, PS5 leads Xbox by nine hours.
Central Europe is closest to the UK. PS5 opens at midnight and Xbox an hour later, at 1am CET.
How big is the GTA 6 preload?
The file needs "up to 212 GB depending on your device", per the Newswire. Rockstar gives no separate figure for PS5 or Xbox, so plan for the full 212 GB and clear that space before the start time in your row.
Sony is more specific for PS5. A PlayStation Blog post on 3 November, by Tim Turi of Sony Interactive Entertainment, tells owners to clear "a minimum of 212GB of storage space on your PS5" before the preload opens at local midnight on 10 November. Rockstar's "up to 212 GB depending on your device" is still the only figure that covers Xbox, and there is no separate Xbox number.
That is 2 GB more than the 210 GB a PS5 store tracker listed on 27 October. Our storage guide has the full maths.
What does Sony's PlayStation Blog say?
Sony's PlayStation Blog confirms the PS5 preload opens at local midnight on 10 November for players who have preordered.
That matches Rockstar's PS5 time, and the storage line above is the only new detail. The post ends with "We'll have more information on Grand Theft Auto VI as we get closer to November 19." Sony gives no launch time.
Has Xbox confirmed the GTA 6 preload date?
Yes. Xbox confirmed 10 November on its own account on X at 6pm UK time on 3 November.
The XBOX post says "Grand Theft Auto VI pre-install begins on November 10" and that the game "launches on XBOX Series X|S on November 19". It links to the Xbox store page. Xbox gave no time and no file size, so Rockstar's 12am GMT start and "up to 212 GB depending on your device" are still the only figures for Xbox.
When do GTA 6 code in box copies arrive?
Code in box versions for both consoles "should be available from retailers beginning November 12", the post says. The Tuesday start is for digital preloading.
How do I make GTA 6 preload automatically?
Turn on automatic downloads and leave the console on or in its low power mode, according to the Support preload FAQ.
For PS5, the FAQ says auto downloads must be enabled and the console "must be powered on or powered off to Rest Mode." For Xbox, players "must have automatic updates enabled, and their console must be powered on or in Sleep mode."
- Preorder the digital edition on the console you will play on.
- Clear up to 212 GB of space before your start time.
- On PS5, switch on auto downloads, then put the console in Rest Mode rather than turning it off.
- On Xbox, switch on automatic updates, then use Sleep mode rather than a full shutdown.
- Leave the console plugged in overnight, and the download should begin on its own.

What time does GTA 6 launch on 19 November?
Rockstar Games has not stated a launch time. Its post gives times for the preload only, and the release date stays the 19th.
Is the GTA 6 map in the preload post?
Yes. Rockstar says a free printable cover art poster and map of Leonida go up on its site on 19 November, launch day.
A double sided physical version of this poster follows from the Rockstar Store shortly after launch. It costs $0.99 on its own, or comes free with any Rockstar Store purchase. Our GTA 6 map guide has both quotes and what we know so far.
