No official size yet. The Xbox listing shows 328 MB, and that is not the game.
The short version
Rockstar hasn't announced how many GB GTA 6 needs, and neither console store lists a real install size as of 12 October 2026. Digital preload opens on 12 November. The boxed version contains a download code, so every player downloads the whole game.
Quick answer
How many GB is GTA 6?
Rockstar hasn't announced a file size. Preloading starts on 12 November 2026, and the boxed version contains a download code rather than a disc, so every player downloads the whole game. Check your console store listing on preload day for the real figure, and clear space now.
The Xbox Store says GTA 6 is about 328 MB. It isn't. That is the size of the preorder entry, a placeholder that will be replaced when the real download goes live, and it is a useful warning about every other number you will see this month.
As of 12 October 2026, Rockstar has not published a file size. Neither has the PlayStation Store listing.
When does the GTA 6 preload start?
Digital preorders can preload from 12 November 2026, according to Take Two's preorder announcement. The real size will show on your console the moment the download begins.
The boxed Standard Edition contains a download code and reaches shops on the same day. So a boxed copy needs exactly as much space as a digital one.
How big was Rockstar's last game?
| Game | Install size Rockstar published |
|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 | 99 GB, plus 50 GB free while installing digitally |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 on Xbox One | 107 GB |
| GTA 6 | Not announced |
Rockstar published the Red Dead 2 figures on its support page in October 2018, eight days before launch, as Game Informer reported. Leonida is bigger and denser than Red Dead's map, so expecting more is reasonable. But a reasonable guess is still a guess, and claims of 300 GB or more have no source behind them.
How much space should you clear?
Clear as much as you can live without. The Xbox Series S ships with 512 GB, of which 364 GB is usable according to IGN, so a very large game would take a big share of it. A PS5 has more room but fills up fast.
- Preorder digitally, or redeem your boxed code as soon as it arrives, per Rockstar Support.
- Delete or move big games to external storage before 12 November.
- Leave extra room for a patch at launch, even though Rockstar hasn't mentioned one.
- Leave the console in rest mode so the download finishes overnight.
Xbox owners can check codes and editions in our GTA 6 on Xbox guide.
Can you play GTA 6 from an external drive?
Rockstar hasn't said. On PS5, games built for the console normally have to run from internal storage or a fitted M.2 drive, and on Xbox Series X|S from internal storage or an expansion card. Plan for internal space to be safe.
Then watch the countdown. Once preload starts, the only number that matters is the one on your screen.
