Why did GTA 6 need a Korea rating?
Games cannot be sold in South Korea without one. Inven says the result was not a given, because the country's record on violent games is mixed.
GTA 5 got the same rating and launched in Korea in 2013. But in 2017, Danganronpa V3 was refused a rating over what Inven calls antisocial depictions. ETNews adds that GTA 6 is said to include the most nudity and the strongest violence in the series, and that the board reportedly focused on whether that fitted the adults only rules.
Who is the GCRB?
The GCRB is a private rating board that sits under the Game Culture Foundation. Since 1 November 2025 it has rated adults only PC and console games, a job that used to belong to the Game Rating and Administration Committee.
ETNews says the government has been moving rating powers to private bodies in stages since 2024. The GCRB took over the lower age ratings first. That makes GTA 6 the most watched game the board has rated since it took on adults only titles, a point both Inven and ETNews make.
The decision also came a week later than planned. A GCRB notice dated 6 October shows its 25th rating meeting moved from 8 October to 16 October because too few members could attend.
Does the GTA 6 Korea rating change the launch?
