The short version

GTA 6 is rated CERO Z in Japan, the top band for players aged 18 and over only. Game*Spark spotted it on the Japanese PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store on 17 October. The only content icons are crime and violence, the same pair GTA 5 got, and Rockstar Games has announced no Japan specific changes.

Quick answer

What is the GTA 6 Japan rating?

The GTA 6 Japan rating is CERO Z, which means it can only be sold to players aged 18 and over. Game*Spark spotted it on the Japanese PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store on 17 October. The only content icons are crime and violence, the same pair GTA 5 carried in Japan.

GTA 6 sat at rating pending in Japan for two weeks after the rest of the world got its labels. It was still pending in the launch trailer on 15 October. On 17 October it finally changed, about a month before launch.

Game*Spark, a Japanese games site, reported that the Japanese PlayStation Store and Xbox store pages now show CERO Z. CERO is the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization, the body that rates games sold in Japan. Z is its highest band.

What does CERO Z mean for GTA 6 buyers in Japan?

It means nobody under 18 can buy GTA 6 in Japan. The PlayStation Store listing says Z titles are not sold to anyone under that age.

There is a second rule on that store. Buying a CERO Z game there needs a credit card, and the full price goes on the card whatever is left in your PlayStation wallet.

Why are there no sex or drugs icons on the GTA 6 Japan rating?

CERO only shows icons for the content behind a rating, and for GTA 6 that is crime and violence. Sexual content and drugs are two of its nine content categories, and neither appears.

Fans spotted the gap within hours. iGrandTheftAuto on X pointed out the missing icons and wondered whether Japan is getting a cut version.

We searched the CERO title database to check. GTA 6 is not listed there yet. GTA 5 is, on four consoles, and every entry is Z with the crime and violence icons only. So the GTA 6 icons match its predecessor exactly.

Will Japan get a cut version of GTA 6?

Nobody knows yet, because Rockstar Games has not announced any changes for Japan. Game*Spark says there was no word on differences between the Japanese and overseas versions when it published.

History explains why people are asking. Game*Spark notes that GTA 5 in Japan, also rated Z, had sexual scenes altered and some gore removed. Digital Spy reported in 2013 that the playable torture scene was cut from the Japanese release.

The overseas ratings point at the same kind of content. Game*Spark says the ESRB and PEGI cite blood and gore, intense violence and strong sexual content. It adds that Australia and New Zealand list sex scenes. Until Rockstar says something or players compare versions at launch, a Japanese cut is speculation.

When does GTA 6 come out in Japan?

GTA 6 launches in Japan on 19 November 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is the same date as everywhere else.

South Korea cleared the game for adults a day earlier, and our Korea rating report covers that decision. Germany's verdict is in our USK 18 story, and the GTA 6 FAQ answers everything else about launch day.
