Colossal Media spent about a week painting Jason and Lucia on a Williamsburg wall. A graffiti artist needed one night to put his name across the bottom.

The short version

The hand painted GTA 6 mural at Wythe Avenue and North 11th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has a large black and white JELOUS tag across its lower half, Kotaku, TheGamer and Beebom report. Colossal Media painted Rockstar's Jason and Lucia Lock and Load art there in about a week, finishing in early October. Rockstar Games, Take Two and Colossal have not commented on the tag or any repair.

Quick answer

What happened to the GTA 6 mural in Brooklyn?

The hand painted GTA 6 mural at Wythe Avenue and North 11th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, now has a large black and white JELOUS tag across its lower half, Kotaku and TheGamer report. Colossal Media painted the Jason and Lucia Lock and Load wall in early October. Rockstar Games has not commented on the tag.

A week of brush work on a Williamsburg wall now has someone else's name across the bottom. The GTA 6 mural at Wythe Avenue and North 11th Street carries a huge black and white JELOUS tag over Jason and Lucia's legs, with a small KTD circle beside it, in photos shared by GTA 6 Intel on 5 November.

Kotaku says a graffiti artist called Jelous sprayed it "sometime late Tuesday night" and then posted it on Instagram. Beebom names the account as @jelous.ktd. Rockstar Games, Take Two and Colossal Media had not commented on the tag when we checked on 5 November.

What happened to the GTA 6 mural in Brooklyn?

It was tagged less than a month after it was finished. The Grand Theft Auto lettering and both faces are untouched, VGTimes reports, and the photos show the same.

Colossal Media painted it by hand over seven days and finished on 10 October, Beebom reports. TheGamer gives the same seven days.

A freelance painter who said he worked on it for Colossal told Reddit it would stay up for only about a month, Notebookcheck reported in October. That is one worker's claim, not a Colossal or Rockstar schedule. Nobody has said whether the wall will be cleaned or repainted before 19 November.

What art is on the Brooklyn GTA 6 mural?

It is Rockstar's Jason and Lucia Lock and Load artwork, the name it uses on its artwork and wallpapers page. Jason stands with a pistol at his side while Lucia sits on the bonnet of a red car checking a handgun. The clean version is the image at the top of this page.

The wall is also a PlayStation ad. The second GTA 6 Intel photo shows a blue PLAYS BEST ON PS5 badge beside a Rockstar Games logo in the bottom right corner, an ESRB Mature rating box at bottom left and a COLOSSAL signature under the image. Rockstar's own GTA VI pages carry the same "Plays best on PlayStation 5" line.

Who painted the Brooklyn GTA 6 mural?

Colossal Media, the New York firm known for hand painted ads. In an Instagram post quoted by GTA BOOM on 6 October, Colossal wrote "Twenty-two years ago, we painted our first campaign with our very first client, @rockstargames." It said its run with Rockstar goes back to GTA San Andreas in 2004.

The corner has GTA history of its own. In August 2013 a giant Trevor mural for GTA 5 went up at North 11th Street and Wythe Avenue, Stuff reported at the time. Stuff named that crew as Sky High Murals.

How did GTA fans react to the tag?

Mostly badly. A Reddit user who said they were an Italian graffiti writer called it "pretty disrespectful, even by graffiti standards", Kotaku reports. TheGamer says Jelous turned off his Instagram comments after the backlash.

Not everyone agreed. Kotaku says some people defended the tag because the mural is a big advert and fair game. One Redditor quoted by TheGamer called tagging an ad for a game about crime almost poetic.

Where else has GTA 6 been painted on walls?

Los Angeles has a finished Jason and Lucia mural on Hollywood Boulevard, and our Hollywood mural report also follows a second painted wall on Wilshire Boulevard. The Florida push, from Port Vice City to the Kaseya Center, is in our Miami marketing tracker. Launch is still 19 November, and our release date guide has every date before then.
