Sony's new black Digital Edition shares a launch day with GTA 6, but it only speaks Japanese and only takes Japanese accounts.
The short version
Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia will release a Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition in Japan on 19 November 2026, the same day as GTA 6. It costs ¥55,000, has an 825GB SSD and no disc drive, runs in Japanese only and needs a Japan region PlayStation account. Preorders open on 20 October.
Quick answer
When does the Midnight Black PS5 come out?
The Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition launches in Japan on 19 November 2026, the same day as GTA 6. Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia prices it at ¥55,000 including tax, about $347. Preorders open on 20 October. The console only runs in Japanese and needs a PlayStation account set to Japan.
GTA 6 arrives on 19 November. So does a black PS5, as long as you live in Japan.
Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia announced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black on its Japanese PlayStation Blog on 13 October. It swaps the usual white panels for a deep black finish that matches the Midnight Black accessories already on sale, such as the PlayStation Portal. A matching Midnight Black disc drive comes out on the same day.
Sony's post lists Grand Theft Auto VI from Rockstar Games among the games arriving that day. It does not say the date was picked for GTA 6, so treat the timing as a lucky overlap until Sony says more.
How much is the Midnight Black PS5?
The Midnight Black PS5 costs ¥55,000 in Japan with tax included, which Dexerto converts to about $347. Add the matching disc drive at ¥11,980 and the pair comes to ¥66,980, or roughly $424 by Dexerto's maths.
For scale, the Standard Edition of GTA 6 costs $79.99 in the US and £69.99 in the UK. Our GTA 6 price guide breaks down every edition.

Can you buy the Midnight Black PS5 outside Japan?
Sony is only selling the Midnight Black PS5 in Japan, and the console is built to work there only. Its system language is locked to Japanese.
It also needs a PlayStation account with its country or region set to Japan. That is the same rule as the Japanese language Digital Edition already on sale, as Gematsu points out.
So an import makes little sense for a UK or US player. The console only accepts a Japan region account, which rules out your current account along with the games and any GTA 6 preorder on it.
Will the Midnight Black PS5 have room for GTA 6?
It ships with an 825GB SSD, and Rockstar has not published a file size for GTA 6. Sony notes that part of that drive is reserved for system software.
The console also has an M.2 slot for extra storage. Our GTA 6 file size guide tracks what the stores show and how much space to clear.
With no disc drive built in, every game comes as a download from the Japanese PlayStation Store. Players who want discs can attach the ¥11,980 drive.
What else did Sony announce with the Midnight Black PS5?
Sony used the same post to repeat that new PlayStation games will be sold as downloads only from January 2028. Disc games released before then will keep working.
Local buyers also get a longer warranty. The Midnight Black model counts toward a campaign that doubles the standard one year warranty to two years for consoles bought by 31 March 2027, as long as the buyer applies.
Should you wait for a Midnight Black PS5 to play GTA 6?
Only if you live in Japan and wanted a Digital Edition anyway. Everyone else can play GTA 6 on 19 November on any PS5 or on Xbox Series X|S.
Sony has announced no Midnight Black model for other regions. Japanese buyers can preorder from 20 October at PlayStation retailers and online stores.
