The trailer looks 1440p upscaled to 4K, and the stutter seen in every earlier trailer is missing. Digital Foundry is careful about what that proves.

The short version
Digital Foundry analysed the GTA 6 Launch Trailer on 16 October 2026. It says the footage looks like 1440p upscaled to 4K, leans towards Sony's new QSSR upscaler not being used, and found none of the animation judder seen in earlier trailers. It warns that a short trailer can hide problems, so nothing here is confirmed for the final game.
Quick answer
What did Digital Foundry find in the GTA 6 Launch Trailer?
Digital Foundry's GTA 6 analysis says the Launch Trailer looks like 1440p upscaled to 4K, probably without Sony's new QSSR upscaler. The animation judder seen in every earlier trailer is not visible. Digital Foundry warns that a short trailer can hide problems, so none of this is confirmed for the 19 November release.
Every GTA 6 trailer so far has shared one flaw. Camera moves and character animations could look jerky even when the frame rate held steady. In the Launch Trailer, that flaw has gone missing.
That is the headline finding from Digital Foundry, the games technology analysis team. William Judd wrote it up on 16 October, a day after Rockstar Games released the trailer, with a video discussion from Rich, John and Oliver.
| Finding | What Digital Foundry says | How sure |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Looks to be 1440p upscaled to 4K, with black bars | Estimate from footage |
| Animation judder | Not present, including in slow pans | Could be shot selection |
| Sony QSSR upscaler | Leans towards it not being used | Not clear either way |
| HDR | Possible AgX tone mapping and inverse tone mapping | Informed guess |
| Capture platform | PlayStation 5, per Rockstar's YouTube description | Stated by Rockstar |
Has GTA 6 fixed the RAGE judder?
Possibly, and Digital Foundry is careful to say only that. RAGE is the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, and animation pacing errors have followed its games since Grand Theft Auto 4.
Digital Foundry spotted the same problem in the 27 minute Extended Look, calling it one of two major issues it found there. In the Launch Trailer it could not see it at all. But the team adds that Rockstar may have shot the trailer in a way that hides the problem. Its conclusion depends on the footage being representative of the game.

What resolution is the GTA 6 Launch Trailer on PS5?
Digital Foundry puts it at 1440p upscaled to 4K, with black bars. The team calls 1440p a relatively high resolution to start from.
Rockstar's YouTube description says the footage was captured in game on a PlayStation 5. Rockstar has not published a target resolution or frame rate for any console, so treat the 1440p figure as an analysis of one trailer.
Does GTA 6 use Sony's QSSR upscaler?
Digital Foundry leans towards no, while saying it is not clear either way. QSSR is the AI based upscaling Sony recently announced for the standard PS5, bringing a feature from the PS5 Pro to the cheaper console.
The reasoning is about cost. Based on Digital Foundry's testing of QSSR in Wolverine, an upscale like this seems to cost around 4ms. Digital Foundry says that would be a lot of a 33ms frame budget to spend when the image already starts at 1440p. The image quality did look good, the team says, but the cinematic shots may have been chosen to avoid the aliasing seen in the Extended Look.
What else did Digital Foundry notice in the GTA 6 Launch Trailer?
Detail, mostly. The team singles out water droplets catching sunlight in the shower scene and an iguana in the opening seconds that it rates above similar animals in Cyberpunk 2077 and Crysis 3.
On HDR, it passes on a theory from Filippo Tarpini, an HDR specialist best known for work at the game developer Remedy. Tarpini suspects Rockstar uses the AgX tone mapper, which could explain blue light looking purple, and possibly inverse tone mapping. Digital Foundry calls this an informed guess.
The team still wants Rockstar to say how the four consoles will differ, and what "best on PS5" means in practice. Until then, our Launch Trailer breakdown covers the story beats, and the Extended Look coverage has the longer footage Digital Foundry compared it with. PC players can track the separate GTA 6 PC timeline.
Frequently asked questions
What resolution is the GTA 6 Launch Trailer?
Digital Foundry says it looks to be 1440p upscaled to 4K, with black bars. Rockstar Games has not published a resolution for the game.
Does GTA 6 use QSSR on PS5?
Unknown. Digital Foundry says it is not clear either way but leans towards QSSR not being used in the Launch Trailer.
Has GTA 6 fixed the RAGE judder?
Possibly. Digital Foundry did not see the old animation pacing problem in the Launch Trailer, even in slow pans, but says Rockstar could have chosen shots that hide it.
What console was the GTA 6 Launch Trailer captured on?
Rockstar's YouTube description says the footage was captured in game on a PlayStation 5.
