The short version

BBC News asked on 19 October 2026 whether romancing a character in GTA 6 counts as cheating. A YouGov poll of 4,114 British adults found 6% would call it cheating and another 19% would not be okay with it. Rockstar Games has said Jason and Lucia do not have to become a romantic couple.

Quick answer

Is dating Lucia in GTA 6 cheating?

For most people, no. In a YouGov poll of 4,114 British adults, cited by BBC News on 19 October 2026, only 6% said a partner's in game romance would count as cheating. Another 19% said they would not be okay with it, which makes one in four. Over half, 54%, said they would be fine.

Holding Lucia's hand in GTA 6 is now a BBC health story. On Monday, one month before launch, health reporter Jim Reed asked whether a romance with a video game character can count as cheating.

His BBC News feature leans on a poll, a TikTok creator and a university professor. The poll is mostly reassuring for players. But a solid minority of British adults would still raise an eyebrow.

What does the YouGov poll say about GTA 6 cheating?

Most British adults would not call it cheating. Only 6% would, according to YouGov.

The pollster asked 4,114 adults in Great Britain on 1 September 2026 whether a partner was cheating if they played a game that required their character to keep up a romantic relationship with another character. The YouGov results split four ways.

The BBC noted that women were "considerably more likely than men to take a dim view". Add the first two rows and 31% of women object in some way, against 17% of men.

How does the Jason and Lucia relationship work in GTA 6?

Their bond grows through time spent together outside the main crime story, according to BBC News.

The report lists shopping, bars and restaurants and working out together. Smaller moments count too, such as holding hands and replying quickly to each other's texts. The Guardian described the same system in September, after Rockstar's Extended Look video set off the debate on social media. Our Trailer 3 explainer covers what that video showed.

Worried partners should hear one more detail. BBC News reports that Rockstar Games has said players do not have to build a romantic connection at all, so the romance side is optional.

Who did the BBC ask about GTA 6 romance?

Two people, a TikTok creator with more than a million followers and a Florida State University professor.

Alli Franco, a 30 year old from Texas who posts anime and gaming content, told the BBC she felt "dismayed" by the debate. "If your partner is insecure about a fictional character, then there needs to be some serious reflection," she said. She compared it to a crush on a TV star, with no other real person involved.

Arienne Ferchaud, an associate professor at Florida State University who studies how people form connections with fictional characters, said games are getting better at keeping players inside the experience. "Games are doing a better job of mimicking reality and mimicking social relationships," she said.

Is the GTA 6 cheating debate new?

No. It took off on TikTok after the Extended Look in September, and the BBC has now carried it to a much wider audience.

The Guardian ran its own piece on 9 September, when TikTok users such as Shelby Haas were telling people not to let their partners play the game. Writer Emma Flint called the idea of in game romance as cheating absurd, while accepting that boundaries differ. The BBC adds the poll numbers and a reminder that Harvest Moon players could marry villagers back in 1996.
