Years of frame matching, one open licence and a map Rockstar never released.

The short version
The GTA 6 mapping project is a fan reconstruction of Leonida. Its current base map, Yanis V16, is credited to Yanis and the GTA VI mapping community, and its landmark data is maintained at gtadb.org. Both are licensed CC BY 4.0. It is not a Rockstar map.
Quick answer
What is the GTA 6 mapping project?
It is a community made reconstruction of Leonida. The current base map, Yanis V16, is credited to Yanis and the GTA VI mapping community, and its landmark data is maintained at gtadb.org. Both are licensed CC BY 4.0. It is built from trailers and screenshots, and it is not a Rockstar map.
Rockstar hasn't shown a single in game map screen for GTA 6. Fans already have a detailed one. The GTA VI mapping community has spent years matching trailer frames and Rockstar screenshots to rebuild Leonida piece by piece.
The result is good enough that it now sits under most fan map sites, including ours. That makes it worth knowing what is solid and what is a guess.

Who made the GTA 6 fan map?
According to the credits page at GTADB, the base artwork is "Yanis V16", and the landmark data and photos come from gtadb.org, maintained by rlx, also known as rolux. That landmark research links places seen in GTA 6 footage to their real world counterparts.
The tiles and data are licensed CC BY 4.0. That allows anyone to reuse them with credit, which is why the same base map turns up on several sites.

How accurate is the GTA 6 fan map?
| Part of the map | Status |
|---|---|
| Region names | Confirmed by Rockstar |
| Rough region positions | Strong fan estimate |
| Coastlines and roads | Fan estimate |
| Total size | Unknown |
Rockstar has named Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga on its GTA VI site. Everything about where those places sit and how big they are comes from analysis.
Is the fan map a leak?
No. It uses Rockstar's own public trailers and screenshots, including the 27 minute Extended Look. That is also why it can keep changing every time Rockstar shows something new.
Expect a big revision on 19 November, when players see the real map for the first time. Until then, our GTA 6 map guide sticks to what Rockstar has confirmed about each region.
