Can GTA 6 win Game of the Year?

It can, but the jury may not have played it in time. A jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets picks the nominees, each sending a ballot with its top five games in every category.

Timing is the snag. Alanah Pearce, a games writer who has sat on the jury several times, said on stream that first round nominations closed on 4 November last year, RockstarINTEL reports. Final votes on the nominees followed on 24 November. Her worry is that any GTA 6 nomination would come from jurors who had not played it.

The Game Awards has not published its 2026 voting dates. If it keeps last year's rhythm, the first ballots close about two weeks before GTA 6 goes on sale. Winners are then decided by the jury (90%) and a public vote (10%).

Will Game Awards jurors get GTA 6 early?

Possibly. The rules page says publishers may give voting outlets review copies or prerelease access to meet the ballot deadlines.

That is where the review reports come in. Insider Gaming says GTA 6 reviews go live before launch, and NateTheHate says copies go out before the end of October, as our GTA 6 reviews report covers. Rockstar has confirmed neither. If both are right, jurors at those outlets could play it before they nominate.

Oli Welsh of Polygon warned in July that if few critics play it early, GTA 6 could end up short of nominations and then a clear favourite in the final vote. His suggested fix was simple. Move the voting dates back.
